Barcom’s RFID Solution Drives STEM Education at Green Spaces Green Prix Chattanooga Race

As the engines rev up for another thrilling edition of the Green Prix Chattanooga race this weekend, Barcom is proud to play a pivotal role in infusing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education into this exhilarating event. Partnering with Green Spaces, we’ve integrated our cutting-edge RFID solution to not only enhance the racing experience but also to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

STEM education lies at the heart of the Green Prix Chattanooga race, where students from 3rd to 12th grade collaborate over the course of a semester to design and construct electric cars. Through hands-on experience and teamwork, these young minds delve into the realms of science, engineering, and technology, gaining valuable skills that will serve them well into the future.

Partnering with Green Spaces

“Barcom joined the initiative when Green Spaces reached out to the community seeking a lap counting system for the races,” said Brice Breakey, Chattanooga Green Prix Manager at Green Spaces.

“Barcom helped us create an automated solution by installing a structure above the start/finish line equipped with four RFID antennas and one RFID reader, manufactured by Zebra Technologies.  This allows us to monitor student cars tagged with RFID as they pass through the finish line,” remarked Breakey. “Each tag is assigned to a specific car/team, enabling us to generate real-time reports for each team displayed on a website showcasing lap times and race standings for each school.”

By implementing our RFID solution, Barcom has helped revolutionize the way lap times and race standings are tracked at the Green Prix Chattanooga race. Each student car is equipped with an RFID tag, allowing us to monitor their progress as they zoom past the start/finish line. This data is then displayed on the race website, showcasing lap times and race standings for each school participating in the event. This not only adds an element of excitement and competitiveness to the race but also provides valuable insights for students to analyze and improve their car designs and racing strategies.

Leveraging RFID in Manufacturing

At Barcom, we leverage the same RFID technology for our manufacturing customers, enabling them to easily and accurately track inventory and assets as they navigate through warehouses or are dispatched out to customers. Just as we can report information about a Green Prix racer when their car completes a lap, our solutions also provide real-time information to our customers regarding the status of their items and equipment based on the specific antenna the asset passes under.
