One Wave, Not One-by-One: Rethinking Prescription Bin Inventory with RFID

We’ve spent a lot of time on this blog covering ideas and theories around barcode and RFID technology. This time, we wanted to show a real-world application instead.

A few weeks ago, I was standing at the pharmacy counter waiting on a prescription — at my age, this is a pretty normal errand for me. But this time, I noticed something happening behind the counter that got the wheels turning.  A pharmacy tech was working through a bin of prescription bags, picking up each one, scanning it, then setting it down one at a time, all the way through the bin. It’s a routine task, but it’s slow, repetitive, and entirely manual.

At Barcom, that’s exactly the kind of everyday friction we look for. Is there a better way to do prescription bin inventory? There is — and it’s one any  pharmacy can put to work without overhauling how their team operates today.

How it works

As each prescription bag is scanned, our system reads the barcode that’s already on the prescription and prints an RFID label encoded with that same information. The printer and scanner are completely self-contained — not connected to any external network or pharmacy system. No data leaves the device. We’re simply reproducing what’s already on the barcode onto an RFID tag, which keeps the entire process HIPAA compliant. Once labeled, the bag is ready to be counted in a whole new way.

With the traditional method, each bag in a bin gets scanned one at a time — twenty bags means twenty individual scans. With RFID, one wave of a handheld reader over the same bin reads every bag simultaneously. Same count, a fraction of the time. Because the tray itself carries an RFID tag too, it’s identified automatically in that same pass — no extra step required.

What this means for a Pharmacy

Looking ahead, once the handheld connects to the pharmacy’s system, that count can feed back in real time — giving staff instant inventory visibility without changing how they already work day to day. That’s the difference RFID makes: less manual counting, fewer errors, and more time for staff to focus on patients instead of bins.
