BC RFID Transfer: One Tag, Zero Manual Entries

Transferring inventory between locations in Business Central sounds simple — until you’re the one doing it by hand, line by line, for every SKU on the pallet.

The Manual Reality

Say you’ve got a pallet of 300 identical items — 300 units of Item A, same SKU, same everything — heading from your main warehouse to a satellite location. Someone still has to create and post the transfer entry for that line — and if the item uses lot or serial tracking, enter the item tracking lines to go with it. One SKU, one journal line, one tracking entry. Manageable, if tedious.

Now make it a mixed pallet: 100 units of Item A, 100 of Item B, and 100 of Item C, all on the same skid. Suddenly that’s three separate item reclassification journal entries — each with its own item tracking lines to fill in behind it. Three lines to key in, three sets of quantities to verify, three sets of tracking data to assign, three chances for a typo or a miscount to slip through.

With a barcode, none of that entry work goes away just because the label’s on the pallet — the material handler still has to see the label and scan it, every time, for every SKU on the load. With RFID, the material handler doesn’t scan anything. They relocate the items or the pallet, and the read happens on its own.

How BC RFID Transfer Changes It

With BC RFID Transfer, that same mixed pallet gets a single RFID tag. The tag doesn’t just represent the pallet — it holds the record of everything on it: 100 units of Item A, 100 of Item B, 100 of Item C, tracking data included.

When the pallet passes through a reader on its way from one location to the next, BC RFID Transfer reads the tag and posts all three underlying entries — journal lines and item tracking lines both — in Business Central automatically. No one opens a journal. No one types a quantity. No one manually assigns a lot or serial number. The transfer is done by the time the pallet clears the dock.

What That Actually Buys You

  1. One tag instead of one journal line plus tracking lines per SKU.
  2. No scanning required. With a barcode, the material handler still has to see and scan the label. With RFID, they just move the item or pallet.
  3. No re-keyed quantities or tracking data.
  4. Faster dock-to-shelf time.
  5. A real audit trail — every read is a timestamped record tied to the tag.
  6. Fewer stock discrepancies.— no one failed to do a task.

BC RFID Transfer is one module within the broader BC RFID Suite, built to bring this same kind of automation to counting, receiving, and movement.

Not Just for Business Central

That means the same approach can be fitted to other ERPs as well. Whatever system a customer runs, the underlying question is identical: does the physical location match the system record? RFID answers that question the same way every time, which makes this workflow just as applicable outside the Business Central ecosystem as it is inside it. If you’re running something other than Business Central and want to know whether this approach fits your system, Barcom can help you figure that out.
